GLOBAL SENSATION COME FROM AWAY TO PREMIERE IN CANBERRA THIS NOVEMBER

“It’s a beautiful show that will make you smile” Sunday Telegraph Sydney

“For once the hype is warranted: it turns out to be the most unlikely of commercial hits, a celebration of the power of community.” The Guardian Australia

Producers Rodney Rigby and Junkyard Dog Productions today announced that the worldwide smash hit, Tony and Olivier award-winning musical COME FROM AWAY, will play at Canberra Theatre Centre from 4 November 2021 for a strictly limited season.

At a reception in Canberra hosted by His Excellency Mark Glauser, High Commissioner for Canada in Australia, and featuring a performance from actor Zoe Gertz of the musical’s emotional show-stopper Me and the Sky, it was announced that Canberra will host a first class musical in COME FROM AWAY.

The ACT’s Chief Minister and Minister for Tourism, Andrew Barr, said this is an opportunity for the Canberra community to participate in a world-class entertainment experience.

“The season at the Canberra Theatre Centre of COME FROM AWAY – a major Broadway musical and huge international hit – reflects Canberra’s status as a creative capital. This is a huge opportunity to attract interstate visitors to Canberra and the themes of COME FROM AWAY align nicely to who we are as a city – progressive, open and welcoming.”

“I am delighted the ACT Government has the opportunity to support this award-winning hit musical. This is one of many major events that provide the local tourism sector leverage to encourage visitation to Canberra,” Mr Barr said.

Set to inspire audiences, COME FROM AWAY follows the incredible real-life journey of 7,000 air passengers who became grounded in Gander, Newfoundland in Canada in the wake of the September 11 tragedy. The small community that welcomed the ‘come from aways’ into their lives provided hope and compassion to those in need. Award-winning husband and wife duo David Hein and Irene Sankoff (book, music and lyrics), travelled to Newfoundland and interviewed thousands of locals, compiling their stories to share with the world.

The Australian Company took Melbourne by storm in 2019, becoming the most successful musical ever staged at The Comedy Theatre and breaking all box office records. It marks the fifth production of the musical worldwide, joining international productions on Broadway, in Toronto, the West End and the US National Tour.

The production is currently performing to sold out audiences at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, after a triumphant encore season in Melbourne from January 2021, followed by a season at QPAC in Brisbane from March 2021.

Producer Rodney Rigby said “We are thrilled to bring the internationally acclaimed musical COME FROM AWAY to Canberra. As the world collectively faces one of the greatest challenges in modern times, this show reminds us that compassion is at the core of our humanity. This is a story about unity, and about acting with kindness regardless of our differences.”

His Excellency Mark Glauser, High Commissioner for Canada in Australia said: “You don’t have to be Canadian to fall in love with COME FROM AWAY. It is a timeless story about a community coming together. As we approach the twentieth anniversary of September 11, it is a story that resonates more than ever.”

In 2020, the musical added to its international award tally with five Green Room awards including Best Production and Best Ensemble. In 2019, along with being voted Ticketmaster’s ‘Ticket of the Year’ by Australian audiences, the musical won four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, Best Theatre Choreographer, Best Sound Design and Outstanding Achievement in Music, along with four Broadway World UK awards.

COME FROM AWAY is directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley (Diana,Memphis), choreographed by Olivier Award Winner Kelly Devine (Diana, Rock of Ages, Rocky), with music supervision by Ian Eisendrath (A Christmas Story, Diana), scenic design by Beowulf Boritt (Act One, Rock of Ages, Be More Chill), costume design by Toni-Leslie James (Jelly’s Last Jam),lighting design by Howell Binkley (JerseyBoys,Hamilton),and sound design by Gareth Owen (Diana, A Bronx Tale).

The production will play in Canberra from Thursday 4 November 2021 at the Canberra Theatre Centre for a strictly limited season.

The eagerly-awaited Sydney premiere of global sensation COME FROM AWAY at the magnificent Capitol Theatre has garnered rapturous reviews from the critics and an outpouring of accolades and affection from audiences.

THE SYDNEY REVIEWS ARE IN: COMEF ROM AWAY IS A SMASH-HIT

“Inspired… What the music does do is brilliantly underscore the action, and it does this while drawing on Newfoundland’s proud Celtic heritage… It’s a show that not only makes one feel good, it rather inspires one to do good.”
John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

“The toe-tapping score, featuring folk-rock with a Celtic twist, is played by an onstage band of seven and is completely infectious. Kelly Devine’s choreography, which is vibrant with plenty of joyous stamping, also goes straight to the heart … COME FROM AWAY is a refreshing, feel-good, uplifting piece about kindness and the power of community, and sends you home with your heart singing.”
Jo Litson, Limelight

“I would highly recommend this production if you are seeking great music, some hysterically funny moments and a touch of catharsis and healing regarding the events of 9/11. Love and compassion can arise in the most trying circumstances.”
Performing Arts Hub

“With irresistible music and a glorious cast, this production is unmissably joyful for young or old… Inviting, heartening and a musical trip to be treasured.”
Reviews by Judith (and Friends)

“Smart and sly costume design, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them changes in accents, and suave musical staging make for a dazzling visual feast that the cast exploits to tell the musical’s story brilliantly. It’s hard not to share the joy of their celebrations when the demographics come together, best seen in musical numbers Blankets and Bedding, Screech In, and Finale.”
IndianLink News

“The underlying message of kindness and compassion in the face of unspeakable horror is one that’s sorely needed right now… COME FROM AWAY is not just an Important Musical for Our Times, it’s also a whole lot of rollicking good fun.”
Time Out

“A captivating 100 minutes of music, smart lyrics and heartfelt characterisations … The heart-warming message of hope and kindness within COME FROM AWAY makes this a piece of theatre that all audiences should see. It has an accessibility in its recognisable music styles while containing clever new music and the story helps unite people in a collective desire to try to be better to others. DO NOT MISS THIS!”
Jade Kops, Broadway World

A global phenomenon, COME FROM AWAY opened on Broadway to wide acclaim in 2017 and continued its international triumph with sold-out, record breaking seasons in Toronto, London and a 60-city North American tour.

The story at the musical’s heart draws inspiration from the real-life events that came in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in Washington and New York, which closed US airspace for the first time in history. It was then that 38 planes carrying almost 7,000 people from more than 100 countries were diverted to a tiny island, known to locals as “The Rock”. Now immortalised in this ground-breaking musical, the extraordinary experiences of the “come from aways”, and the unexpected outpouring of generosity and hospitality they received in Gander, Newfoundland, continues to inspire unity and hope among audiences throughout the world.

With book, music and lyrics by David Hein and Irene Sankoff, COME FROM AWAY is directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley, choreographed by Olivier Award winner Kelly Devine (Rock of Ages, Diana), with music supervision by Ian Eisendrath (A Christmas Story, Diana), scenic design by Beowulf Boritt (Rock of Ages, Be More Chill) costume design by Toni-Leslie James (Jelly’s Last Jam), lighting design by Howell Binkley (Jersey Boys, Hamilton), sound design by Gareth Owen (Diana, A Bronx Tale).

COME FROM AWAY has won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical (Christopher Ashley) and four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, Best Theatre Choreographer (Kelly Devine), Best Sound Design (Gareth Owen) and Outstanding Achievement in Music.

COME FROM AWAY is produced in Australia by Junkyard Dog Productions and Rodney Rigby.
