20th November, MELBOURNE: Ticketmaster, the global ticketing leader that provides 500 million tickets to fans across 30 countries, has polled live entertainment fans worldwide from its 200 million database to discover the most popular live events of 2019.

Topping the list is Come From Away – a critically-acclaimed and award-winning Broadway musical which has been playing at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre since July. Its powerful narrative is based on true events surrounding the experiences of passengers on stranded planes in Gander, Newfoundland after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Currently playing on Broadway and in Toronto, North America and London’s the West End, the show was brought to Australia by producing group Newtheatricals.

Producer Rodney Rigby said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Come From Away has been crowned Ticketmaster’s Ticket Of The Year. For the last four months, the production has been wowing audiences from all over Australia with standing ovations for every performance. It is wonderful that the show has touched so many people this year.”

Elton-mania will sweep the country at the end of this month as Sir Elton John kicks off his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour across the country. The tour will see Elton become the first artist to play Townsville’s brand-new North Queensland Stadium as he plays to over a half a million fans on his 40-date tour across Australia and New Zealand.

Australian promoter for Elton John, Michael Chugg said: This month sees the start of Elton John’s epic Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. It’s one hell of a show, we’re beyond excited to be bringing it to Australia, and from Ticketmaster’s Ticket Of The Year poll it looks like fans are highly anticipating it too!”

Pop icon P!nk takes the number one place globally with her Beautiful Trauma World Tour thrilling audiences across America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. The Grammy Award winner, who released her eighth studio album Hurts 2B Human in April, tallied up a record 157 shows worldwide.

P!nk said: “What an honour! I had such an incredible team and touring family as part of the Beautiful Trauma World Tour. We worked really hard to create the best show we could for all the fans and I’m so proud of all of us.”

Musical theatre and theatre dominates this year’s Ticket Of The Year top 10 with Come From Away, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Chicago The Musical and Muriel’s Wedding featuring.

Aussie comedy legend Tim Minchin is the only solo artist to feature in the list. Minchin hit the road with his BACK tour earlier this year and due to unprecedented demand added more shows in Perth, Sandy Bay (Tasmania) and Brisbane which will take place in the new year.

GLOBAL HIT BROADWAY MUSICAL COME FROM AWAY: EXTENDS SEASON IN MELBOURNE UNTIL FEBRUARY 2020

An international success story, COME FROM AWAY today announced that it will extend its season at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre to Sunday 16 February 2020, with the musical’s final weeks to go on sale this Friday 22 November at 9am.

The critically acclaimed production, which opened in July 2019, continues to attract spontaneous standing ovations from the entire audience at each and every performance.

Proving that it is a truly global phenomenon, COME FROM AWAY will open in Beijing and tour China with the Australian cast, commencing in April 2020.

Currently there are 5 productions of COME FROM AWAY playing simultaneously around the world. The first production opened on Broadway to rave reviews in 2017 and has continued its record-breaking triumph with a second production in Toronto approaching its third year, a third production touring North America, now in its second year, and a West End production that opened in February earlier this year. The recently opened Australian production in Melbourne marks the fifth company.

The ground-breaking new musical is based on the incredible real-life events in the wake of the September 11 tragedy when 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 people from over 100 countries were redirected to Gander, Newfoundland, almost doubling the population of the remote Canadian town.

Capturing the generosity and hospitality of the small community of Gander who invited the “come from aways” into their homes, it is an inspirational story of hope and humanity.

With book, music and lyrics by David Hein and Irene Sankoff, COME FROM AWAY is directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Ashley, choreographed by Olivier Award winner Kelly Devine (Rock of Ages, Diana), with music supervision by Ian Eisendrath (A Christmas Story, Diana), scenic design by Beowulf Boritt (Rock of Ages, Be More Chill) costume design by Toni-Leslie James (Jelly’s Last Jam), lighting design by Howell Binkley (Jersey Boys, Hamilton), sound design by Gareth Owen (Diana, A Bronx Tale).

COME FROM AWAY has won numerous awards including the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical (Christopher Ashley), Winner of five Outer Critics Circle Awards (New York) including Outstanding New Broadway Musical. On top of this, the musical has received three Drama Desk Awards (New York) including Outstanding Musical, four Helen Hayes Awards (Washington, D.C) including Outstanding Production of a Musical, four Gypsy Rose Lee Awards (Seattle) including Excellence in production of a Musical and six San Diego Critics Circle Awards including Outstanding New Musical.

In February 2019, the musical added to its international award tally with four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, Best Theatre Choreographer (Kelly Devine), Best Sound Design and Outstanding Achievement in Music and has recently been nominated for Best Musical in the UK Evening Standard Awards.
